Periodontology

Preserving the supporting structures of the teeth and the health of the gums.

A beautiful smile is impossible without healthy gums. Early recognition and treatment of gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis is crucial, because if neglected these diseases lead to receding gums, loose teeth and, in the end, the loss of otherwise healthy teeth.

Treatment at our practice includes thorough ultrasonic removal of calculus and soft deposits, deep cleaning of periodontal pockets and treatment of inflammation. An equally important part of therapy is dedicated patient education in specific oral hygiene techniques, which stops the disease from progressing and keeps your teeth stable.

Gingivitis and periodontitis

Gingivitis is gum inflammation you recognise by redness and bleeding when brushing, and at that stage it heals completely. Left untreated, it progresses over time to periodontitis: the inflammation reaches the bone, periodontal pockets form, and the teeth gradually lose their support.

How we treat it

Therapy begins with removing calculus and deposits, continues with treating the periodontal pockets and hygiene instructions, and is followed up with regular check-ups. In advanced disease we plan tooth by tooth and tell you honestly which teeth have a long-term prognosis and which do not.

Healthy gums are a precondition for any quality prosthetic work: a crown on a tooth that is losing bone does not last. That is why periodontal preparation is a standard part of our prosthetic plans.

Common questions

My gums bleed. Is it serious?

Bleeding is most often a sign of gingivitis, which heals completely when treated early. Do not ignore it: an examination and calculus removal usually solve the problem.

Can periodontitis be cured?

Lost bone does not grow back, but the disease can be stopped and kept under control. With regular therapy and good hygiene, teeth are preserved for years.
